Tips for Removing Old Sod and Placing New Sod

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

If your yard is less than appealing, sod is one of the easiest and fastest ways to turn your brown, patchy, and dead lawn into a green, lush, carpet of grass. Laying sod is much quicker than planting grass seed, which can take weeks to grow and fill in. Sod brings your yard back to life as soon as it’s been laid.

If you are ready to upgrade your yard, read on for our tips on how to remove old sod and lay new sod. Follow our guide and you'll have a lawn that's the envy of all of your neighbours in no time.

How Much Sod Do I Need?

The first step in the process is to figure out how much sod you need to order. Sod comes in rolls that cover a certain amount of square footage. To figure out how much you need, you need to calculate the square footage by measuring the length and width of the area that you want to cover.

Clearing and Removing Old Sod

Once you place your sod order, get your yard ready for the new sod. To do this, you need to remove all of the old sod and get rid of anything left behind, such as weeds, rocks, roots, etc. You can do this manually by digging into the sod and prying it up, but this is time-consuming. If you have a large yard, a rotary tiller might be the better option. After you have tilled and removed the old sod, go through with a rake to break up any clumps of dirt and get rid of sticks, roots, or other things left behind.

Preparing For New Sod

If there are any areas of your yard that are uneven, you might want to consider grading your yard at this point. You can also add dirt to even things out.

Installing New Sod

Laying new sod is the easy part. Once your soil is ready, start laying your strips of sod. Start at the edges and work your way in the middle, laying the sod in a brick formation. This keeps it from looking too uniform in long strips and also helps facilitate water drainage. Tuck in the edges of the sod rolls once they are unrolled to hold them in place. You can also dampen the sod as you roll it out. You should water 1-2 times a day in the first two weeks and wait at least two weeks before mowing.
