Top Tips for Keeping Your Lawn Green

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

As autumn approaches, there's no need to fret about your lawn. Your grass can stay green despite the changing of the seasons. There are simple ways to overcome typical lawn problems and keep your grass looking its best.

A green lawn is a sign of a healthy lawn, which not only benefits the aesthetics of your home but the environment as well. A grassy, green lawn cleans the air by trapping dust and CO2 and releasing oxygen. Let's not fail to mention how a green lawn reduces noise pollution. It absorbs busy sounds like traffic and people, quieting down the neighbourhood. Part of keeping your lawn in good shape involves knowing common lawn problems. This guide will cover some top tips for keeping your lawn green.

  1. Watering Helps Remedy Lawn Problems Keeping your sod lawn green means knowing when and how to water it. Morning is always the ideal time to turn on the sprinklers. Sunrise watering helps saturate the soil and the grass. This allows the sun to naturally evaporate excess water without drying out the grass. Make sure your sprinklers water the edges and corners of the lawn. These are typical places on the lawn that often dry out from excessive heat. Also, avoid using a water hose. This may cause puddling which could damage the lawn. To keep your sod lawn healthy, water it once or twice per week, saturating the soil 1 inch deep.

  2. Mowing As the summer fades into the fall season, don't stop mowing your lawn. Sod lawns remain healthy at a grass length of about 1 1/2 inches—2 at the most. If you cut it too short, you remove most of the leaf blades needed for food production. When this happens you starve the grass, causing it to die. When the grass length grows over 2 inches, preferably around 3 inches, it's time to mow. Mow no more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at a time. This will keep you from mowing too frequently and killing your grass.

  3. Aeration Sod lawn aeration is the process of puncturing the soil to feed it air, water, and nutrients. When you notice watering running off the grass' soil versus sinking into it, it's time to aerate. You can purchase or rent a lawn aerator. Walk behind it and allow the machine to punch holes in the soil. As it punches holes in the soil it extracts small plugs of dirt. The holes in the soil shouldn't reach further than 3 inches deep and needs to be at least 4 or more inches apart. The cores of soil themselves shouldn't expanse more than a 1/2 inch wide as well. Don't worry about raking or throwing away the cores. Allow them to rest on the lawn as a top dressing.

  4. Fertilizer As long as the grass actively grows it needs fertilizing in the spring, summer, and fall. Refrain from using spray-on, liquid fertilizers. They cause damage to sod lawns by burning the grass. Stick to slow-release fertilizers to help deliver essential nutrients that helps the grass grow deep roots.
